Name the number that comes before and after any number up to 120
Number Cards Investigation
Timeframe: 5-10mins
Audience: 1:1, whole class
Materials: Flashcards/number cards
Summary: Work together to line all of the number cards up in order. The teacher can give prompts such as ‘Point to the number four. What is the number that comes before/after four?’.Â
Guiding questions: An extension of this task would be for the student to close their eyes and for the teacher to take one card away. What is missing? How do you know?

100s Chart Investigation
Timeframe: up to you
Audience: Whole class/small group/1:1
Materials: Interactive 100s chart (or 120 chart), individual charts for students
Summary: Utilise an interactive 100s chart and display on the screen so that the whole class can view the resource together. Have a student pick any number. Then identify the number that comes before it, and after it. Have students practise the same task in partners using their own laminated 100s charts.
Guiding questions: What happens when we look at the number before? (It is less than our number.) What happens when we find the number that comes after? (It is greater than our number.) Utilise vocabulary such as one more, one less. The next step would be to introduce how the 100s chart is organised into rows of 10, and this can help us to find 10 more and 10 less. This task can be extended upon through the use of a 120 chart.Â
